~ In June of 2007 while roving the line of vendors at the Mt. Airy Fiddlers Convention I stopped into the Buckeye Banjos booth being overseen by the builder Greg Galbreath. I picked up one of his banjos and had trouble putting it back down. To be honest I'm mostly a fan of the old Vegas but this instrument had a sound all its own - a very dry plunk with lots of low end but plenty of clarity and volume as well. When I could get myself to stop playing it for a moment I took a closer look and found it to be fine workmanship - carefully crafted, with a very tasteful melding of old school lines and proportions and Greg's own personal touches. I broke down and purchased it and can happily report that the price was very reasonable for an instrument of this quality and sound. ~ This banjo has tremendous presence, volume, authority and character. It's got a clear, hollow tone with an underlying sweetness in the high end and a full, compelling growl on the low notes. Slides end up as loud and full on the end note as they were on the picked note with plenty of sustain. The Wedding Banjos:
Julie Shephard and Adrian Powell, recently married in May, decided to give each other custom banjos as wedding gifts and I was honored they chose me to make them. They designed the banjos together using similar themes to represent their union but also individualized them. Both banjos are made of maple with square pegheads containing no inlay, and with their initials inlayed on the heels. Julie's banjo has an inlay of a hog at the 5th while Adrian's has a rooster. Additionally, Julie chose to have a skin head on her 11" rim and a short backstrap, while Adrian went with a Fiberskin head, a 12" rim and a long backstrap. Adrian plays with the Pea Ridge Ramblers while Julie dances with the Linefork Girls and leads the Hillbilly Revolution. You can see more pictures of the banjos in Gallery 3.
