Happy Customers

Check out what some satisfied Buckeye Banjos customers have to say.

~ I'm thrilled with my new Buckeye Banjo.  It's graceful and elegant to look at and every joint is perfectly fitted...it's a real solid feeling instrument. The tone is remarkable in that it has that deep dry thump but with just a hint of sparkle (which I think a banjo should have).  Everyone who plays it notices that it's amazingly balanced from the low end all the way up the neck.  It's very powerful and will cut through in a big jam, but when I play it solo a whole other personality comes out.  Thanks Greg, you do great work. - Chris Coole - Toronto, Ontario

~ I very sincerely mean everything I said about this being the sound I've always imagined.  It's almost spooky how close this is to the sound that's been in my head.  I've been playing this banjo non-stop and discovering new things everyday.  The evenness of the tone is unbelievable.  A good friend of mine described it as having an "almost classical guitar-like clarity".  I simply can't wait to get this thing onstage and in the studio!  I'm also noticing so many little sculptural details (like the slightly flared heel).  It's such a beautful object, I think I'd love it even if I was deaf. - Curtis Eller - Durham, North Carolina

~ I had spent all summer sort of wishing that I'd magically run into the banjo of my dreams - someone once told me that finding an instrument was a bit like falling in love. I was ready step up from the banjo I'd been borrowing, ready to play an instrument that really inspired me, that really expressed how I felt, playing this music. The more I play, the more I realize that playing music is, for me, another voice of mine, the instrument a sort of wonderous translating device. And so I am so glad that, after falling for banjo #050 at Clifftop, I decided to follow my impulse. This is such a versatile banjo; it's sweet and deep, and at the same time with a little bit of punch to it. Exactly what I was looking for. Exactly what I need, as I explore all the different sorts of banjo music and approaches there are out there. It's an instrument that inpires me to play more, to play better, to play with other people. Thanks so much. - Anna Roberts-Gevalt - Eggleston, Virginia

~ Love my Buckeye! I've been bangin' on it everyday since we returned from Cliff-stock. Now that my daughters playin' banjo we've been fightin' over it. Plays like butter...and I love the tone. - Scott Dixon (Buffalo Creek Stringband) - Charlotte, North Carolina

~ This banjo has tremendous presence, volume, authority and character. It's got a clear, hollow tone with an underlying sweetness in the high end and a full, compelling growl on the low notes. Slides end up as loud and full on the end note as they were on the picked note with plenty of sustain. The sound is extremely well balanced from string to string and it plays flawlessly all the way up the neck. Perfect for Round Peak style - it's voice brings Kyle Creed's best instruments and playing to mind - and works just as well for two and three finger picking. The details of workmanship are superb, and it has an understated elegance in its materials and ornamentation, with tasteful inlay enhancing rather than distracting from the whole visual effect. I guess I kinda like it. - Craig Edwards - Boston, Massachusetts

~ The banjo is amazing! It instantly became my main player. Thanks so much. - Jeff Menzies - Toronto, Ontario

~ In June of 2007 while roving the line of vendors at the Mt. Airy Fiddlers Convention I stopped into the Buckeye Banjos booth being overseen by the builder Greg Galbreath. I picked up one of his banjos and had trouble putting it back down. To be honest I'm mostly a fan of the old Vegas but this instrument had a sound all its own - a very dry plunk with lots of low end but plenty of clarity and volume as well. When I could get myself to stop playing it for a moment I took a closer look and found it to be fine workmanship - carefully crafted, with a very tasteful melding of old school lines and proportions and Greg's own personal touches. I broke down and purchased it and can happily report that the price was very reasonable for an instrument of this quality and sound. I got a chance to play it at a big jam session a few days later and it effortlessly cut through everything, proving itself to be a top rate contender in the world of contemporary old-time banjos. - Mark Schatz - Annapolis, Maryland

~F***ing sweet! - Drew Gildea - Newark Valley, New York

~You can't go wrong buying a Buckeye Banjo made by Greg Galbreath. They are, in my opinion, the best value in old-time banjos out there right now. They are clean, crisp, elegant in their simplicity, easy to play, great sounding, and consistently setup. Playing out of double D tuning without a capo, the low D makes your chest vibrate. All of the notes have just the right amount of sustain and separation so they ring clearly and speak for themselves without stepping on the other notes. The only thing I like better than playing my Buckeye Banjo is listening to sombody else play it. - Marc Perdue - Charlottesville, Virginia

~ ...the other good news is that I love the sh*t out of the banjo you built for me! It's the banjo I've wanted for a long time.  Thank You. - Shawn Galbraith (The Hackensaw Boys) - Jefferson, North Carolina

~ I am *extremely* happy with my banjo. It's an incredible musical instrument and it has brought me a geat deal of pleasure in the last few homesick-for-the-mountains weeks. I've been playing a lot more than I ever did before and enjoying it more. I'm convinced this instrument makes me a better banjo player. - Jennie Noakes - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

~Having searched for endless hours for the perfect gigging banjo that can take the abuse that I give it off and on stage, stay in tune and have excellent tonal qualities, I have found the one.  The Buckeye Banjo.  Whether playing clawhammer or bluegrass over the bridge this banjo does the job.  Seaching around Clifftop 2008 for three days, trying new and old banjos, I came across Greg's banjo stall.  After hours of playing the deal was made, the rest is history.   I have fitted a Humbucker pickup to this banjo with no tonal loss whatsoever.  This banjo sounds great acoustic or electric. Shame my other banjos have to stay in their cases these days, but one banjo does fit all - the Buckeye.  Thanks, Greg. - Robert Gabb (Prairie Belt Boys)

~ Thank you for the terrific banjo! I'm not sure if I've ever played as much banjo as I have in the last couple of weeks... it's so inspiring to have such a nice instrument. - Mary Jane Epps - Phoenix, Arizona

~ I had been searching for the right banjo for some time. After playing many different instruments, I still yearned for the perfect one for me. With all the banjos I had played, there was something missing, either in the sound, the feel or the build. Finally through a link from the fine folks at the banjohangout I discovered Greg Galbreath's Buckeye Banjos. After combing the galleries on many a late night I was compelled to do the scary. I purchased a banjo without ever playing it. Let me say, it was a decision I will never regret. My Buckeye Banjo is the most beautifully crafted instrument with a sound that resonates some inner emotions. Every note is articulated perfectly and seems to jump off this instrument. The craftsmanship is inspiring. Every time I pick it up I'm reminded of how some folks find their true calling, which makes this world a better place. Undoubtably, Greg has followed his. To top it all off, Greg's a super nice guy and I hope we actually get to meet someday so I can buy him a beer. - Jamie Krapolh (Three Cheers Faraday) - Denver, Colorado

~ Your banjo has the feel I like, as well as the sound. It sounds great! When I began to mess around with it, I would hear a note and it would make a tune come into my head that I hadn't played or thought about for years. Kind of like sculpters saying all they do is release the image already in the marble. I almost never make large spontaneous purchases. I'm an old Scottish tightwad. That banjo really spoke to me. - "Mac" McCumsey - Lexington, Virginia

~ It's been a month to the day since I picked up my banjo #89.  I've had opportunity to play it now in various tunings, settings, and situations.  Let me tell you...I'm very pleased!  I am amazed at the consistency of volume and tone across the strings and up and down the neck.  It'll allow ya to pick as softly as you please or stand up and bark amongst a bunch of deranged Martin pickers, all without loss of tone.  Also amazing is the different range of "styles/attitudes" I've found I can get out of this banjo.  It's also the most comfortable banjo that I've ever picked up.  Like I told ya, coming up to your place to pick the banjo up on Dec. 26th was almost as exciting as bringing my son home from the hospital when he was born! This is my dream banjo and it's definitely found a permanent home.  Thanks for taking the time and care to make this wonderful instrument.  It's only been a month and I've already got my money's worth of playin' out of it! - Mike Elliott - Gate City, Virginia

~The banjo arrived yesterday, expertly packed and in perfect shape. Wow, I'm almost speechless. The sound and playability are fantastic and the craftsmanship is at a whole different level than any banjo I've played before. The inlays are GORGEOUS, as is the wood and the finish, and little things like the dressing on the fret ends (the cleanest & smoothest I've ever seen) and those tuner nuts. Oh, and all the extras you threw in -- the very cool shirt but also a set of strings, an extra bridge, a wrench, and a Buckeye.  Thank you, thank you.  Anyway, I'm absolutely delighted and overwhelmed. - John Salmon (Sugar in the Gourd) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

~I received the Little Wonder yesterday, and oh my did I receive a banjo!!!!  I'm not much for hyperbole, so all I can say is excellent in all respects. The width and feel are just what I wanted. The string height and intonation are spot on. And then there's the inlay work. I'm struggling for words here, but it takes a superior craftsman to make the kind of understated ornamentation I asked for stand out like it does. Amazing! Thank you so very much for the application of your considerable talents. They really show.  Once again Greg, thank you for a fine job that very much blurs the line between art and function.  Simply outstanding. - John Letscher – Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania

~To me this is a perfect banjo - simple, clean, very nice inlays, beautiful wood, amazing sweet sound anywhere on the fretboard.  Easy to play.  Somehow humans want just a little more when they have possessions - the latest computer or for some who own a boat it is called "'onefootitis".  This banjo prevents all of that - there is no improvement, no extra foot to wish for.  Only disapointment now is that the sweet anticipation that we experienced as kids before Christmas, and that is now seldom felt, is over. - Ian Ollers - Toronto, Ontario
